My safety career journey began in 2012 after a 30-year career with Canada Post, after I lost my Dad to a workplace illness in 2009 called Mesothelioma (known as asbestos exposure). I realized then how important knowledge and understanding of workplace safety are, and that the risks we take at work and all the hazards we come in contact with can affect us many years later.
It was important to me that I help workers — especially young ones — to understand the risks in their workplace. This led me to receiving my OH&S certificate in 2013 from the University of Alberta. I try to use my knowledge of safety in my day-to-day life, continuously learning.
Working at Key to Safety has given me the opportunity to grow my knowledge and experience of safety. Working alongside other safety-conscious people holds me accountable as a safety professional. We have a great team of strong, determined women who are working towards continuous improvement and on educating workplace professionals.
Along with my work, I am passionate about my faith, gardening, travelling, and spending time with my family and friends, especially my grandchildren. I am very social and love new experiences! Two weeks prior to starting my OH&S program, I feel off a ladder at home while washing windows, bruising my tailbone badly. Though now an experience I recommend, it was a strong introduction to safe work practices.
